Context

It was inspired by a recent trip spent in the heart of Mother Nature.

One moment that lingered with me was an encounter with a monkey, missing one hand sitting silently by the door of my hotel room, locking eyes with me. That quiet, powerful exchange, among other moments from the trip, shaped the emotional energy and visual direction of this piece.

Ideation

At the heart of the piece lies a great leaf, an emblem of birth and renewal, gifted by Mother Nature herself. Its form subtly echoes the contours of a woman’s nether region, symbolizing the primal source from which all life begins. A man is depicted resting quietly amidst the sounds of nature, finding solace in a place many today might fear, forgetting that it was once the cradle of life for our ancestors.

The animals depicted are drawn from real encounters, like the yellow-spotted millipede, which releases hydrogen cyanide as a defence when threatened. Snails covered every path I walked, and bees drifted calmly through the air so at ease in their environment that they posed no threat, simply existing as if they were home.
